Stephen is the newest member of the Welaptega Team. He is a fourth year student taking Mechanical Engineering at Dalhousie University and is working on completing his third and fourth co-op terms here at Welaptega. Much like previous recruits, we thought it would be awesome to get to know more about this aspiring young man so we sat down with him for a Q&A.

A permanently moored Floating Production Unit has a complex mooring system with many constraints. A wide variety of factors must be considered to try to predict the future and account for degradation of the system.

Our work with the pan-industry FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) Forum has been focused on mooring integrity and the management of mooring systems. A decade ago, we were a founding member of the FPSO committee that worked toward setting guidelines related to mooring: since then, these guidelines have been adopted by UK Oil and Gas, and is being applied around the world by operators.

On a project in a West African river delta, Welaptega proved the value of our insight and technology to a major oil company dealing with what appeared to be an incredibly high amount of corrosion on their mooring system. Welaptega CEO Tony Hall explains exactly what happened when we turned up on the job.

Cultural diversity is the norm in the offshore industry. This blog entry was written approximately 62 nautical miles off the Niger Delta of Nigeria on a vessel manned with personnel from Nigeria, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, South Africa, Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, England, Canada, India, and the USA. This cultural diversity is compounded by the cultural diversity within each of the nations represented, but no more so than Nigeria. There are an estimated 521 languages and over 1150 dialects and ethnic groups within Nigeria.

When assessing risk of an operation, the UK Oil and Gas considers both the consequences of failure and the probability of failure. Each plays a crucial role in determining the attention that should be paid in preventative action. Consequence of failure is the outcome of a possible hazard (What happens if…) where the probability considers how likely it is that something will go awry (How likely is this to happen?).
